BAGUIO CITY -- Officials of the Philippine Nurses Association have asked nursing license applicants who took the June board examinations to voluntarily repeat the test and ease the crisis brought about by reports of exam cheating.

The PNA and the Association of Deans of Philippine Nursing Colleges urged the 92 examinees, who exposed the cheating that allegedly took place in Baguio during the exams, to take the lead so they could “clean up the mess” that the government would not touch.

Speaking at a Friday forum organized for Baguio-based examinees, Dr. Fe Marilyn Lorenzo, director of the Institute for Health Policy Development Studies at the National Institute for Health (NIH), said three Philippine hospitals and American employers had already advised PNA that they would not be hiring nurses who took the June tests.

Resigned

Lorenzo was the chair of the Commission of Higher Education’s technical committee on nursing education who resigned recently over CHEd’s supposed “unwillingness” to cushion the problem.

She said the latest monitoring conducted by PNA and various nursing schools reveal that the country may soon be oversupplying the world labor market with nurses, when traditional employers like the United States and Europe are starting to solve the labor and manpower problems in their health care systems.

She said the original projection that overseas demand for Philippine nurses will peak at 2015 may no longer be reasonable.

She said the government’s response to the scandal had been unsatisfactory, so it was up to the examinees “to make the supreme sacrifice by retaking the examination” to remove the blemish “that would haunt them forever.”

The Professional Regulation Commission has turned down this option for resolving the crisis “because they have no budget,” Lorenzo said.

“If you passed the first time, there’s a statistical chance you’ll do better the second time … Pay the P900 exam fee again. What will you lose?” she said.

Vernon Peralta, spokesperson of the 92 examinees, said he was shocked by the proposal.

Peralta, who passed the exams, said such a sacrifice would not be easy to accept because the government has not yet punished the culprits.

He asked the Baguio nursing schools and officials of the PNA to instead plead their case before their potential employees.

No cheating

He said that until a “mastermind” was caught, no examinee from the 2006 batch could be assured that no cheating would again take place.

Only 18 of the 92 nursing license applicants who exposed the cheating failed the exams.

The applicants earlier asked the PRC to suspend the members of the Board of Nursing and to seek an impartial fact finding team to probe the scandal.

The PRC eventually admitted that cheating had occurred, but it only recommended the filing of negligence charges against two nursing board members for misplacing copies of their raw test questions. Vincent Cabreza, Inquirer Northern Luzon

wat wud we lose?? duh! eh kung ikaw kaya magbayad ng p900! isama mo na kapatid ko kasi 2 kmi and 2 rin kmi pumasa! easy for u to say dumbheaded!! ask the 92 complainants (minus the flunkers) if they would really want a retake now that theyv passed! and please.. BE REAL! pero, i dont expect them 2b one. or if u want eh d mag retake kay jan sa baguio, total they are willing to pay another registration fee. kayo kayo din ang gumagawa ng mga multo niu. if ure xur that u dint cheat baket kayo takut na baka e revoke license niu in the future?? anu yun? la bang laws? hindi niu ba alam yun? dont u know ure ryts?!

tama ka dyan sa comment mo RN, it's easy for them to say na there's nothing to lose, wala na nga yong pera binayad natin sa review, board and lodging, etc. Kaya kami we'll fight for our rights!

Dapat kung may retake yung mga tga baguio lang ang kumuha kc kau lang naman ang willing to have a retake and in the first place you started these mess...nadamay lang kami dahil sa inyo.......No to retake!

ANONG NOTHING TO LOSE KA JAN LORENZO? NAG ARAL KA BA? KUNG IKAW SASAGOT NG MGA GASTOS KO OK FINE MAG RETAKE AKO...FARMER LANG TATY AT NANAY KO KAYA WALA NA KO PAMBAYAD...BAT HINDI NA LANG YUNG MGA BUMAGSAK ANG PAGHANDAAN NYO KASI SILA BUMAGSAK NEED NILA RETAKE..KAMI NAIPASA NA NAMIN KAHIT NATANGGAL NA LEAKED TEST..KAYA KUNG GUSTO NU RETAKE MERUN NAMAN TALAGA PARA SA MGA BAGSAK..IYON NA LANG ANG TULUNGAN NYO UNG MGA BUMAGSAK AT WAG NYO NA PAKIALAMAN ANG MGA PUMASA OK!!!!!!????

Ms. Lorenzo the american employer has nothing to do with the local board. This is not the basis of accepting employment in the US. You can apply the NCLEX EVEN IF YOU PASS OR NOT THE LOCAL BOARD. They have their own NCLEX. You should start from the culprit and not from the students who is innocent in this situation.

Just wondering why everybody is dwelling so much on the issue of retake and making all of us disunited? Why are the deans pointing their accusing fingers on our sons/daughters who honestly passed the recent board examinations? The Deans are even putting another burden to us by advocating a retake of the exams. This is not to mention the anxiety our sons/daughters suffered brought about by this crisis, including us, their respective families who supports them with our hard earned money. In the first place, is it not that any student needs the approval of their dean in order to graduate and need their permission for their students to take the board exams?

Why should we instead direct all our efforts on the real culprits and not to the poor passers, who are the real victims? Why punish the honest board passers without giving them the benefit of doubt? The mere comments that they, who passed the recent NLE, are not competent hurt us more. Do they mean that those who flunked the test are more competent than our sons/daughters who passed? Where is justice in these comments? Where is the logic?

How about those GREEDY people who are the root causes of all these mess? They are washing their hands (maybe they have perfected hand washing one thousand times!) on the issue and before we know it, they might be those people who are putting the blame on the passers, who are actually their victims.

Who knows, they (culprits) themselves are celebrating these days because it was everything they wanted to happen, being disunited, so that the limelight will not focus on them? Look who's laughing now!

Who knows, they (culprits) themselves are also those people advocating the retake issue in order to divide the poor victims (divide and rule)?

Lest these CULPRITS are CHARGED in court and PUNISHED, this issue of leakage will still continue for it is a common knowledge that leakage is practiced since GOD knows when.

The PRC earlier declared: "LEAKAGE IS A THING OF THE PAST" thus admitting the fact that leakage existed in the past! Nobody, not anybody challenged PRC!

And so I say... HAD THESE (LEAKAGE) THINGS WERE CORRECTED IN THE PAST, WE SHOULD HAVE NOT BEEN SUFFERING THESE TRAUMA NOW...

We cry for JUSTICE !!! Punish the CULPRITS and not the honest board passers! Please do not make the honest board passers the fall guys in this mess.

ABA!!!!! Anong nothing to lose? Hindi yata marunong magkwenta tong taong to!... The review cost, board and lodging, the sleepless nights we had... we have already lost a lot!!! Even the time spent waiting for the final verdict of the issue... these we have lost! Kung uulitin ang exam... we have no choice but to file a case against PRC for all the damages they have incurred sa bawat isang studyante dahil sa NEGLIGENCE ng mga yan! Both passers and those who failed are losers in this game... gumawa sana sila ng paraan to give chance dun sa mga bumagsak... UP, UST at sino pa yung isang skul?... before u take your stand... alamin nyo muna kung ano ang nasa sa loob ng mga pumasa before you request for a retake... don;t consider it a unanimous decision yet... DEANS!!!... u better ask your students muna! we are the ones who will seat again sa exam... hindi kayo!!!

“By retaking the nurse’s board exam, it will give you a chance to prove that you really had the knowledge the first time".--- We don't need to prove anything because we already passed, retaking will give those who failed to prove that they have the "knowledge for the first time" because if we board passers do it again isn't it for the second time? For those who will have a retake this December I will pray and wish you guys all the best. Our reputation is already being tainted at the moment, but not from honest board passers and sensible people who failed, but from those who shout RETAKE for some selfish reasons. For those shouting for retake with the honest agenda of removing the stigma from our batch, I am not ashamed that I am a June board passer. If people will stereotype our batch then they are the ones who have a problem. I am too old to be surprised from “stigma comments”, but not stupid enough to stoop down to their level. If you guys are easily affected by comments like that, then you are not ready to be a nurse. It’s so funny that some people are arrogant enough to say that everyone in the WHOLE WIDE WORLD is looking at us and what will we do regarding the leakage issue. So many things are happening and our nursing leakage issue is not even worth the bother for them. Terrorists are plotting for goodness sake, what about the war between Lebanon and Israel? Perhaps all the excitement about the retake made some people irresponsible in what they say just to pressure people to have a retake but please bear in mind, your comments are shown all over the world. You may fool others here and abroad with your “media fiesta” but we are just watching you guys desperately trying to push the retake issue at the senate. Again, punish the ones, who are responsible for the leakage, but not honest board passers.
