Commentary: On the nursing board exams scandal

By Renee F. De Guzman

San Fernando City, La Union (24 August) -- It is sad that the 42,000 nursing graduates who took the licensure exams last June may have to retake a new examinations.

Painful as it is and unfair too to those examinees who really worked hard and honestly passed the examinations. The apparent leaked questions in the examination probably benefited only a few hundred cheaters but the cheating scandal has tainted the entire Philippine nursing corps.

We have to bite the bullet if only to redeem the integrity of the Philippine Nursing Licensure Examination and the country itself.

National interest is at stake. This scandal gives a black eye to the country’s nurses who are considered among the best in the world and the most sought after by foreign employers.

Owing to the examination scandal, there are reports that US recruiters are turning away from nurses who took the board exams in June 2006 while Philippine hospital administrators are not also eager to hire any nurses from the same batch for they might proved to be incompetent having passed the exam by cheating.

Chairman Dante Ang of the Commission on Filipino Overseas (CFO) also reported that the application of the Philippines for inclusion on the list of international testing centers of the United States National Commission on Licensure (NCLEX) has been put on hold due to the scandal leakage issue.

Unfortunately, the credibility of the professional board exams has been compromised even as Malacanang said that it is an “isolated case and should not be cause for stigma” on Filipino nurses and other professionals who are among the best in the world. That the government will charge and punish the culprits who will be found guilty.

The country is placed in a disgraceful situation as even the integrity of previous nursing board examinations is now in question. The imperative solution is a bitter pill to swallow require all examinees to take a new set of examinations.

On the part of the government, through the Commission on Higher Education, without any dent of politics and business interests a tougher regulation should also be implemented on the mushrooming nursing schools and review centers across the country by closing down poor performing schools in the nursing board examinations. This is to improve quality and promote excellence in the nursing education which has been declining as seen in high failing rate in the yearly nursing board exams. Also, there is a need to replace the members of the Professional Regulation Commission with new ones who are not owners or deans of nursing schools or review centers.

This way, we are able to restore the credibility of our professional board examinations and at the same time make our professionals competitive both locally and globally. (PIA La Union)

It also saddens me that there are people like you who don't think logically. People like you are a disgrace to society. Why don't you just get on with your life and PISS OFF!!!If you wanna help, just keep your mouth shut 'cause our life is already a living hell.

It also saddens me that there are people like you who don't think logically. People like you are a disgrace to society. Why don't you just get on with your life and PISS OFF!!!If you wanna help, just keep your mouth shut 'cause our life is already a living hell.

As passers, we have our rights and we intend to uphold those rights in every way we can.
We will exhaust all our efforts as much as we can to bring back that dignity and integrity that we should've had already. To hell with you who think we are incompetent and cheaters. You better watch your words 'cause we will prove to you someday that we will be the best at least in our profession not only here in this God forsaken country but also in other parts of the world.
PUNISH THOSE PEOPLE RESPONSIBLE FOR RELEASING AND DISSEMINATING THE LEAKAGE!!! NOT US, THE EXAMINEES, 'CAUSE WE'RE THE VICTIM HERE...

firstly, i think the person who made this commentary has every right to voice out what he thinks is right or wrong. this blog was made primarily because of this. secondly, i think that the as professionals, we have the right and responsibility to uplift the intergrity of our profession. we should not only go after those who made this leakage scandal possible, but we should also clean the reputation of the filipino nurses not only here in our own country but also in abroad. try looking at the bigger picture.

TO THE 4TH POSTER: AS A PASSER, I ALSO HAVE every right to voice out what I think is right or wrong BECAUSE THIS INVOLVES US. AND WHAT MAKES YOU THINK THAT HAVING THE 42,000 EXAMINEES RETAKE THE NLE IS THE ANSWER TO "clean the reputation of the filipino nurses"? I GUESS YOU'RE THE ONE WHO CAN'T SEE THE BIGGER PICTURE WHOEVER YOU ARE!

look at the big picture? restore dignity & integrity?

AT OUR EXPENSE!!!! WELL EXCUSE ME!!

If you think there's any integrity at any goverment office in this country, you're DREAMIN!!!

Mr. RENEE DE GUZMAN, WHY DON'T YOU SACRIFICE YOURSELF & SLASH YOUR THROAT JUST TO SAVE YOUR MOTHER'S FACE FOR RAISING SOMEONE WHO THINKS LIKE YOU!!!

SACRIFICE "US" FOR AN IMAGINARY INTEGRITY? PINOY KA BA? NAG-ARAL KA BA NG HISTORY? ARE YOU OBSERVANT OF YOUR OWN COUNTRY?

GOD, WHY HAVE YOU FORSAKEN THIS COUNTRY WITH PEOPLE LIKE THIS?

yes, well, it may be at our expense. but it's all worth it in the end. we have the right to fight for a clean and honest board exams. maybe, you will not accept my opinion regarding this issue. but, this is just ME! i have all the right to have an opinion.

and to the 7th poster... did you even took Logic or Philosophy in your nursing course? by the way you attacked the one who wrote this commentary, you're committing a fallacy. try attacking the arguement instead.

sorry, that's argument.

I have visited several web sites and have made various comments regarding different articles or comments on the issue of the nursing leakage in the Philippines. It is indeed sad, once again, I could't help it but say a few words. Now a few of you if not more will disagree and probably even hate me. Coming from a very poor family who strived to realize my dream of being a nurse and coming to US I can relate to the frustrations a lot of you feel, not knowing when , how I can help my family the soonest I could. Now having said this, painful as it is, yes the world is watching, we need to reddem ourselves. It is true that you still have to pass NCLEX but your batch is subject to scrutiny, unless you are willing to pay big bucks to recruiters who claim they would have no problem placing all 72,000 in hospitals here. I would be very skeptical about this. Unless you want to work on small facilities, underpaid, taken advantaged of. You deserve a lot more than that. Yes you are victims, but you need to understand, this is not about punishing you, it is about restoring your credibility in the eyes of you future employers. They will not look at what grade you achieved, your ranking, nor the school you graduated from but rather how you passed the exam. Something to think about.

thank you for that. i truly believe that sacrifices should be made to restore the credebility of june 2006 nurses. very well said by a nurse who's in the US already.

this is crazy! redeeming the so called "integrity" STAINED BY CORRUPT, GREEDY, OPPORTUNISTIC INDIVIDUALS who were practicing their so called profession for a long time AT THE EXPENSE OF THE YOUNG PASSERS?! THIS IS REALLY CRAZY!

MAY UTANG PA NGA ANG MGA CULPRITS NA ITO SA MGA EXAMINEES MOST ESPECIALLY SA MGA PUMASA DAHIL KUNG HINDI SA PAGKAGANID, PAGKACORRUPT AT PAGKAOPORTUNISTA NG MGA ITO HINDI SANA DINARANAS NG MGA KABATAANG PUMASA ANG GANITO. KABALIWAN ANG PARUSAHAN ANG MGA INOSENTENG PUMASA! PAGKATAPOS ANO NA ANG MANGYAYARI SA KASO? PABAYAAN NA LANG?

ANG HINIHINTAY NG LAHAT AT PATI NA ANG MGA TAGA IBANG BANSA AY MAPARUSAHAN KUNG SINO ANG MGA CULPRITS NA ITO AT HINDI ANG MGA INOSENTE! YAN ANG INAABANGAN NG LAHAT!

KAHIT ISANGDAANG BESES NA MAGPARETAKE AY HINDI NA MAWAWALA ANG TINGIN NG MGA IBANG BANSA SA ATIN! NOT UNLESS THE CULPRITS ARE PUNISHED! ISANG KABALIWAN, NA ANG MGA INOSENTE ANG MAGREREDEEM NG MGA KASALANAN NG MGA CULPRITS! BAKA ANG KASUNOD DIYAN AY IPAPAKO NA NILA SA KRUS ANG MGA PUMASA!

"Only a nurse can comment..."

ito lang iniisip ko... masasabi mo bang yung passing grade which was manipulated bec. may mga parts na tests na counted at hindi eh in-arrange arrange lang... i don't have anything against anyone... parang ang gulo lang talagang isipin na pano pa magiging CREDIBLE ang license mo kung hindi mo naman score talaga yun? i feel sorry for those who are truly deserving to pass... but i feel bad also bec. baka hindi rin nila nakuha yung mas deserve na score... yun lang... I FEEL SO BAD because nangyari ito BUT things do happen... but we must act accordingly... kung baga.. ang isang pagkakamali ay di na di ba dapat solusyonan ng isa pang pagkakamali... sana wag naman masyadong mag-away ang mga kapwa nurses dito... i'm sure maapektuhan din naman ang mga susunod na magbo-boards kung maiipon at magre-retake nga... i'm sure din na yung mga passers naman noon at working na ngayon ay nagsa-suffer bec. of comments esp. those working abroad... IBA RIN SIGURO YUNG CLEAN SLATE... MAY SACRIFICE NGA LANG but who knows! It might be worth it... at least wala ng MGA DOUBTS KUNG NAG-RETAKE AND YOU STILL PASS... ALSO.. I beleieve if YOU ARE REALLY DESERVING YOU WILL STILL PASS... GOD HAS HIS WAY OF KNOWING WHAT'S BEST FOR US... We just need to be brave enough to trust him.... just my two cents...

TO THE 15TH POSTER: "GOD HAS HIS WAY OF KNOWING WHAT'S BEST FOR US... We just need to be brave enough to trust him"
WHAT MAKES U THINK THAT GOD WOULD WANT US TO RETAKE AND THIS IS THE BEST FOR US?
LET'S JUST WAIT AND SEE WHAT WILL HAPPEN.

leave the issue to nurses!
mr. ang, stay a bussinessman!
in case u dont know, NCLEX exam in some states do not require local board exam!
so if u say now that u want us to retake because of test 5 and ol, then by all means we should tell all the nurses who are now working in the states who did not take the local board to caome back because they are incompetent!
now tel me mr.ang, would u have funds for that too?
shut up and let nurses handle this!
and so with tadle!
