Let everyone take nursing test again’ -- Gordon

THE only way to restore “the integrity and credibility” of the nursing licensure test and profession is to scrap the results of the June 11 to 12 board examinations and administer a new test, Senator Richard Gordon said on Monday.

Suggestions to allow everyone to pass would “fail everyone” too, he said.

"There would be less demand for Philippine nurses among hospitals and medical centers, especially in foreign countries. Even the innocent -- those who passed the tests without cheating -- would suffer," Gordon said.

A total of 42,006 nursing graduates took the June exams. Forty-two percent or 17,871 passed.

Earlier, Dr. Fe Marilyn Lorenzo, director for the Institute for Health Development Studies at the National Institutes for Health, told a hearing of the Senate inquiry into the nursing exam leak that three Philippine hospitals and American employers have advised the Philippine Nurses Association that they would not hire those who took the June examinations.

In Senate Resolution 516, Gordon warned that the "allegations (of cheating) could taint the credibility of the entire government-sponsored testing system and affect the image of all Filipino professionals going out of the country."

He noted that the world looks to the Philippines to fill the nursing shortages in many countries due to the reputation of Filipino nurses for competence, diligence and compassion.

The senator also called on the Philippine Regulations Commission (PRC) to punish those responsible for the alleged leakage of examination questions and suggested that government regulate the operations of review centers.

“Only nursing schools should be allowed to operate review centers and they should regularly publish their passing rates," Gordon said.

Accusations of a leakage surfaced after an examinee complained that other examinees admitted having secured an advance copy of the answers to the examination questions three days before the tests were given.

Those who blew the whistle on the incident said the answers were provided by a review center.

"The nursing board leakage is just the latest scandal that undermines the public trust in the nurses produced by Philippine schools, following allegations of loose accreditation by nursing schools and the Commission on Higher Education's feeble enforcement of academic standards in nursing schools," according to the resolution.

The next hearing of the Senate inquiry into the test leak will be on Wednesday but it still remains to be seen whether PRC officials will finally show up after having earlier refused to honor summons.

THE only way to restore “the integrity and credibility” of the nursing licensure test and profession is to scrap the results of the June 11 to 12 board examinations and administer a new test" --- I don't want a retake. Why should I, I passed my board exam fair and square despite removing the allegedly leakage questions. Why are people questioning our competency? How dare this senator question our credibility, when we all know that politicians are a bunch of hypocrites trying to sound righteous? For those who will have a retake this December I will pray and wish you guys all the best. Our reputation is already being tainted at the moment, but not from honest board passers and sensible people who failed, but from those who shout RETAKE for some selfish reasons. For those shouting for retake with the honest agenda of removing the stigma from our batch, I am not ashamed that I am a June board passer. If people will stereotype our batch then they are the ones who have a problem. I am too old to be surprised from “stigma comments”, but not stupid enough to stoop down to their level. If you guys are easily affected by comments like that, then you are not ready to be a nurse. It’s so funny that some people are arrogant enough to say that everyone in the WHOLE WIDE WORLD is looking at us and what will we do regarding the leakage issue. So many things are happening and our nursing leakage issue is not even worth the bother for them. Terrorists are plotting for goodness sake, what about the war between Lebanon and Israel? Perhaps all the excitement about the retake made some people irresponsible in what they say just to pressure people to have a retake but please bear in mind, your comments are shown all over the world. You may fool others here and abroad with your “media fiesta” but we are just watching you guys desperately trying to push the retake issue at the senate. Again, punish the ones, who are responsible for the leakage, but not honest board passers.

SAYANG HANGA PA NAMAN AKO SA YO..I THOUGHT YOU ARE GOOD!!! HAY NAKUKUHA KA DIN PALA SA PERA AT WAG KAYO MAKISAWSAW SA ISSUE...DAHIL HINDI NYO ALAM BURDEN NG MGA STUDENTS..

This maybe hard but Sen. Gordon has a point. Let's have ALL RE-TAKE in order that our License is CREDIBLE.

mr. gordon, kung pwede lang keep your mouth shut and mind your own business. sino ka para mag mando samin na magretake kami ng exam?
