Avoid contact with patients, health officials say High fever, sneezing are common symptoms
The flu season is here and the public should take precautions against catching the contagious respiratory disease, health officials said yesterday.
Department of Health (DoH) Secretary Francisco T. Duque III said it is important to avoid close contact with persons who exhibit symptoms of having the flu.
These include high fever, sore throat, runny nose, headache, body aches, tiredness, and difficulty in breathing, Duque said.
Children with influenza may also experience diarrhea and vomiting, he said.
To help contain the spread of the flu, Duque advised people to cover their nose and mouth when sneezing.
He said people should also cover their nose and mouth when people around them sneeze.
People should also wash their hands thoroughly and often, especially after bouts of sneezing or after touching articles of people who show symptoms of being sick with flu.
"If you get the flu, just stay at home and keep away from school or work or social gatherings. Take in lots of fluids or juices and take paracetamol for fever. Refrain from taking antibiotics outright and see your doctor if your condition worsens," Duque said.
Experts say the flu has an incubation period of five days during which the infected person can transmit the virus to another person even before he or she becomes sick.
