PGMA orders nursing board revamp

Manila (28 August) -- President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo has ordered Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) Chair Leonor Tripon-Rosero to implement a massive reorganization of the six-member Board of Nursing in view of the controversy caused by the leakage in the 2006 nursing licensure examinations.

At the same time, the Chief Executive directed Rosero to find ways of punishing those responsible for the leakage and sparing the innocent ones from prosecution.

"I talked yesterday with the chairman of PRC and I told her to find a solution to the problem so that the guilty will be punished and those who are innocent will be spared," the President said in a radio interview.

The President disclosed that she already talked with Commission on Higher Education (CHED) Chair Carlito Puno and told him that she would sign an executive order that would place review centers for the nursing board exams under the "regulation" of the CHED.

In the same interview, the President stood by Rosero, who has bucked calls for her resignation amid the controversy.

"Si Chairperson naman kung titingnan mo naman sa dami ng board exams na ginagawa niya, ito lang ang nagkaroon ng problema, iyong iba maayos na maayos. So iyong problema ay nasa nursing examination lang (If you would look at the number of board exams she has handled, the chairperson has handled them well. It's only this one. So I think the problem lies in the exam itself)," she explained.

The President, however, did not answer the question on whether she favored proposals from the academe for a repeat of the nursing test.

Two weeks ago, the Court of Appeals issued a temporary restraining order (TRO) against the oath-taking of those who passed in the June 2006 nursing licensure examinations because of the controversy.
