Nursing college deans probed over test leak
Twenty-two deans of various universities and colleges are now being investigated over the leakage in the June 2006 Nursing Board Examination, ABS-CBN's Bandila reported Wednesday.
In a document obtained by Bandila from the Professional Regulatory Commission's Board of Nursing, Dean Leonora Reyes of Lyceum College said the nursing college heads met with Dr. George Cordero, president of the Philippine Nurses' Association (PNA), several days before the board examination.
Cordero is accused of paying P7 million to the Bureau of Nursing Examiners to get the test leakage. He denied the accusation and threatened to file libel charges against those accusing him of initiating the test leakage.
In her testimony, Reyes said she received word the that nursing school dean were among those who participated in the "final coaching" of examinees before the June 11-12 board examination.
She said according to information, the briefing was held at a Manila cinema on June 8 and 9.
The PRC document named some of the schools represented at the briefing as : Iloilo Doctors' Hospital, Lorma College in La Union, University of Northern Philippines in Vigan, Arellano University in Manila, West Negros College in Bacolod, Bataan Polytechnic College, Central Luzon Doctors' Hospital in Tarlac and Philippine College of Health Sciences in Manila.
Cordero owns the Philippine College of Health Sciences, according to information.
Informants have affirmed Cordero's involvement in the test leakage despite his repeated denials. He said that his son would have passed the board exam if it were true a test leakage took place. His son failed the exam, Cordero said in previous interviews.
Witnesses, however, said that they will testify that Cordero initiated the test leakage. A witness said she heard Cordero bragging about the P7 million paid to examiners and his promise of a trip to Switzerland in exchange for the test questions.
On Wednesday Cordero resigned as PNA president, said legal counsel Lucio Espinosa. He was replaced by PNA vice-president Marylin Yap.
The National Bureau of Investigation, meanwhile, is in the process of gathering evidence for its probe.
Lawyer Elfren Meneses, NBI chief for anti-fraud and computer crimes division, said harsh penalties await those involved in the test leakage.
Coaching confirmed
PRC chairwoman Leonor Rosero confirmed that the leak was shown in a Manila moviehouse. "What happened is that the review center gathered a group of reviewees and the alleged leakage was flashed on the screen at an extra cost for them," she said.
A televised report said Inress, a review center owned by Cordero, facilitated the review session
Cordero denied the allegations. He said that if the leakage was true, then his son, who is also taking up nursing, should have topped the board exams.
Cordero's son failed to pass the licensure exam.
PRC earlier declared the June 2006 Nursing Licensure Examination valid.
PRC, however, said graduates who would want a re-take of Tests 3 and 5 or the entire examination can do so in December though the questions in the modules will be changed.
The re-take will be free of charge, the agency said. The commission said the nursing board exam was fraud-free despite accusations of leakage of test questions to some examinees.
The agency also said the re-take will not be compulsory and that those who took the June 11-12 examination will still receive the results as they are graded according to Board of Nursing standards.

im a student of LORMA COLLEGES in la union and i would like to clarify things about this issue.. our dean was not there (sm manila) on the 8th and 9th of june because she was at our campus at that time entertaining the students for the enrollment! She can give u her evidences that she was there at that time and not in sm manila.. This issue is really a bigbang for us students because we know that our school has already established its name and none of us, the faculty or anyone from Lorma will do such move to destroy the name of the school. And besides our rating speaks for it if we really benefited from that leakage. We only have 39% rating and do u think we really got some leakage from that power point thing in cinema 9?! That's very PATHETIC!
We passed the exam because we really exerted effort, and sacrificed a lot!!!
In behalf of LORMA COLLEGES, this issue is very unfair to all the examinees (passers / non - passers) and to all the students who will be graduating from LORMA. Ur destroying the credibility of our institution.. again i would like to repeat our dean didn't attend in that final coaching hence, lorma is INNOCENT!!!
